Case study of a heat transmission network in the Inn Valley: The use of industrial waste heat is crucial for decarbonizing heat supply. While the electricity transmission grid connects many generation, storage, and consumption units, current options for feeding waste heat into a heating network and for interregional exchange are limited. The Heat Highway project therefore investigates interregional heat transmission networks that combine four areas: industrial waste heat and other sustainable sources, district heating networks, industrial process heat sinks, and storage. These networks connect consumption centers and industrial sites by passing through areas with other heat sources and sinks – a total of 32 municipalities along the Inn Valley and in the Zillertal are part of the region studied.

Analysis of short-term energy markets and interoperable flexibility platforms: The tool illustrates the daily processes of short-term energy markets and flexibility procurement, as well as the exchange of information and bids between the actors involved. It is based on digital solutions developed within the project to improve the interoperability of flexibility platforms and on an agent-based AI model for analyzing strategic behavior, simulating market dynamics, and evaluating new market designs. Users can follow the various steps of the GOT and GCT and access detailed scenario descriptions and model results as PDFs.
