Hydrogen from renewable energy sources has the potential to enable the full decarbonization of the energy system. However, the widespread deployment of renewable hydrogen is currently hindered by high overall costs. To address this barrier, the H2REAL project was initiated.

Overview#
The project H2REAL aims to establish a Hydrogen Valley in the Eastern Austria region, thereby advancing the development and application of hydrogen technologies. The focus lies on demonstrating an integrated value chain along the entire H2 lifecycle - from production, storage, and distribution to end-use.
The project follows a holistic approach that considers technological, economic, and environmental requirements, aiming at the broad implementation and scaling of hydrogen solutions.
Findings#
Integration across the hydrogen value chain#
The project demonstrates that a functioning hydrogen economy can only be achieved through the integration of production, storage, distribution, and use.
Cluster-based collaboration as a success factor#
Organizing partners into clusters enables structured collaboration along the value chain and facilitates coordination of complex systems.
Importance of demonstration projects#
Demonstrators are essential for validating technological solutions in practice and assessing their scalability.
Role of regional and cross-regional cooperation#
Collaboration with model regions and partners beyond regional boundaries supports the development and dissemination of hydrogen solutions.
Foundation for scalable energy solutions#
The combination of technological implementation and system-level perspective enables the development of sustainable scale-up projects for the energy transition.
